Ida I Dewa Agung Istri Kanya (1799-1868), king of Klungkung, in Bali, Indonesia, was a brilliant strategist and army general fighting the Dutch. She also greatly influenced art and literature as a writer and composer and inspired the autonomy and creativity of women. She was also known as Ratu Perawan, the Virgin Queen, because she refused to marry.

Anda Kerkhoven (1919 – 1945) was born in Saint Cloud, France and grew up in Indonesia. She studied medicine at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. As an outspoken pacifist, she joined the peaceful resistance group De Groot during WW2, working as a courier, falsifying documents, and helping people go into hiding. Anda was arrested, tortured, and executed by the Sicherheistdienst in Glimmen on 19 March 1945.

Helena Pieters (? – 1759) was a woman from Celebes, present day Sulawesi in Indonesia. She was enslaved and gifted to Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff. He freed her and she became his maid and his njai -his mistress. The name Helena Pieters was given to her when she was baptized, her own name is undocumented. She had four children with Van Imhoff who married into Groningen nobility and became local governors and mayors. Helena Pieters is one of the foremothers of Groningen. She passed away on 3 September 1759 in Batavia, present day Jakarta, Indonesia.

Maria Theresia Dumatubun – Surojo (1918 - 2008), mother of Wulan Dumatubun, musician, dancer and storyteller in Forget to Remember. She came to the Netherlands from Indonesia in 1951 with her husband, a KNIL soldier, and daughter. They were placed in camp Westerbork.
